Emma King has lived in Bollington for almost all of her
life. The foothills of the Pennines to the flat of the Cheshire Plain have been
her source of inspiration for the duration of her painting career. Other landscapes
and seascapes interest and stimulate her but it is the ever evolving space and
light of the local area which fascinates her the most. Derbyshire’s moody tones
and turbulent skies, Cheshire’s depth and layers.
Emma’s creativity has developed into a profession. After
gaining her degree from the University of Northumbria she trained at Manchester
Metropolitan University to become a teacher of art and has enjoyed a highly
successful career in sixth form colleges across the region. However, she also
finds time to continue with her own work in her studio at home, which in turn she
uses to inspire her students.
Emma works predominantly with acrylics but also incorporates mixed media, watercolour and occasionally oils. Working from sketches that she makes whilst in the landscape she returns to her studio where she interprets them into impressionistic canvases capturing the essence of the places she has been. Textures, colours, light are more interesting to her than literal representations.
As well as the Bollington Festival Emma is a regular
exhibitor at the Bollington Arts Centre and Barnaby Festival, and is a regular
guest tutor for the Bollington Art Group. She is currently studying on the MA
Teacher Maker at MMU.

have always found pleasure in experimenting with media and techniques. As a young student I studied at Birmingham
School of Jewellery and experienced the joys of acid erosion, lost wax casting
and smelting gold. Employment followed at RSC in Stratford on Avon where I made
costumes. On moving to the North West I
became a self employed costume maker. Years
later I was able to return to full time education and I specialised in Fine Art
(printmaking) at Manchester Metropolitan University. For a number of years I
taught printmaking in schools, colleges and university. I have also tried to find time to do my own
work.
I enjoy walking and always take a sketchbook
with me. My influences are varied. The Gritstone Trail, Bollington, Derbyshire,
Cornwall and Devon coastal paths never fail to inspire. Architectural structures
and still life all interest me too. First observations are made in sketchbooks,
on larger sheets of paper and via camera. I’m interested in shapes, colours,
sky lines, the drama of view, the quality of light and mood. It’s the challenge of interpreting a subject
into an image through technique and process that intrigues me.

I
have shown work in galleries in Penryn, St Mawes, Dumfries, Manchester,
Bollington and Macclesfield. Recent exhibitions
have included ‘Familiar Images’ (A joint exhibition with Emily Mugridge) at Bollington
Arts Centre, ‘A feeling of Déjà vu’ and ‘Another Feeling of Déjà vu’ (Barnaby Festival
2012 and 2013) and ‘Print’ (Marburae Gallery 2013). I have participated in 20:20 print
exchange (Hot Bed Press) and in the Bollington Artist Trail in 2009 with Emma
King.
